Key findings
- Senior roles outnumber entry-level roles roughly 8.5 to 1 in the broader Indian tech job market as of mid-2026 โ this isn't a perception problem freshers are imagining, it's a structural feature of current hiring.
- Hiring has shifted toward experience, not volume โ companies are adding headcount, but increasingly for people who need less ramp-up time, which squeezes the entry-level door even as overall hiring grows.
- Fresher hiring is not zero โ it's concentrated. Naukri's JobSpeak Index has separately reported double-digit YoY growth in fresher (0โ3 year) hiring in several 2026 months, spread across both metro and tier-II cities โ a genuinely different (and more encouraging) signal than the postings-mix stat above.
Switchly's own native postings track the market closely, at an even sharper senior skew: of jobs posted directly by companies using Switchly (not aggregated from other job boards), 4.9% are entry-level and 61.9% are senior โ essentially matching the external benchmark's entry-level share, with an even heavier senior tilt.
Entry-level vs. senior, by share of live postings
Switchly's own figures are split into two columns, and neither is blended with the external benchmark: native postings (jobs a company created directly through Switchly โ 2,066 open roles across 81 companies) vs. all listings visible to candidates browsing Switchly, which also aggregates roles from external ATSs like Workday and Greenhouse (11,067 open roles total, 183 companies). We report both because they answer different questions โ native reflects who's actually hiring through Switchly; all-listings reflects what a candidate sees browsing the site.
| Experience band | External benchmark (all-India) | Switchly โ native postings | Switchly โ all listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry-level | 5.9% | 4.9% | 3.8% |
| Mid-level | ~44.0% (derived remainder) | 33.1% | 21.6% |
| Senior | 50.1% | 61.9% | 50.0% |
| Unspecified in listing | โ | 0.1% | 24.6% |
Mid-level share for the external benchmark is a simple arithmetic remainder (100% โ 5.9% โ 50.1%), not an independently reported figure from the source. Switchly's own bands are classified by pattern-matching each listing's free-text seniority tag (e.g. "Senior", "Staff Engineer", "Entry-level", "Intern") into entry/mid/senior buckets โ a heuristic, same in spirit to the external source's own methodology, not a hand-curated taxonomy.
Sources & methodology
This report combines three things, kept clearly separate: (1) a third-party India Tech Hiring Report covering ~15,400 live postings collected May 1โJuly 29, 2026 across the broader Indian tech job market โ this is where the 5.9% / 50.1% split comes from; (2) Switchly's own native postings โ 2,066 open roles from 81 companies who created the listing directly through Switchly; and (3) all listings visible to a candidate browsing Switchly โ 11,067 open roles from 183 companies, which also pulls in roles aggregated from external ATSs (Workday, Greenhouse, Breezy, and others) via Switchly's job-aggregation pipeline.
We did not blend any of these three sources into a single number anywhere on this page. Snapshot taken September 2026 โ these counts will drift as new jobs are posted and old ones close.
Frequently asked questions
Is it actually harder to get an entry-level tech job in India right now, or does it just feel that way?
It's a real, measurable pattern, not just a feeling โ live postings data puts entry-level roles at under 6% of the market, against roughly half the market explicitly asking for senior candidates. That said, fresher hiring is still growing in absolute terms in 2026, per Naukri's JobSpeak Index โ it's concentrated rather than absent.
Why are companies hiring so few freshers relative to senior engineers?
Several forces compound: AI-assisted development is raising the bar for what a junior hire is expected to contribute independently, many companies are prioritizing immediately productive senior hires during a period of cautious headcount growth, and structured campus-hiring pipelines have gotten more selective industry-wide.
Where should a fresher actually be looking, if not the generic "entry-level" filter?
Switchly's own native postings skew even more senior than the market overall (61.9% senior vs. the market's 50.1%), so filtering by "entry-level" alone will surface a small slice of a small slice. Widening a search to include roles tagged "Junior," "Associate," or specific mid-level titles (which don't always require the years of experience the label implies) tends to surface more realistic options than the strict entry-level filter alone.
Does this report count internships and campus-placement offers as "entry-level"?
No โ this report counts live, standalone entry-level job postings only. Internships and campus-placement pipelines run through different channels and aren't reflected in the postings-mix stat above; see Switchly's Engineering Internships in India page for that audience.
Are all the jobs on Switchly posted directly by companies using Switchly?
No, and we report both cuts above rather than blending them. 2,066 of the 11,067 open roles visible on Switchly were created directly by a company using Switchly (81 companies); the remaining roles are aggregated from external ATSs like Workday, Greenhouse, and Breezy, so candidates browsing Switchly see a wider pool than just Switchly's own direct-hiring customers.
