Fastest-Hiring Sectors in India:
14 days vs. 120+ days, by industry

We set out to build a named-company hiring-speed leaderboard. Switchly's own application volume isn't large enough yet to do that honestly — so here's the sector-level picture instead, with the source's own data-quality caveats intact.

Retail and e-commerce roles fill in 14–20 days — the fastest sector tracked. Executive and leadership searches take 120+ days. The national average sits at 35–45 days.

Source: aggregated India hiring-practice reporting (see methodology) — the source explicitly notes no independent national time-to-hire benchmark exists for India by sector.

Key findings

  • Retail and e-commerce hire fastest in India at 14–20 days — high-volume, standardized roles with fewer approval stages.
  • Executive and leadership searches take the longest at 120+ days — roughly 6–8x slower than retail hiring, driven by multi-stakeholder, often confidential search processes.
  • Senior technical roles (AI/ML, cloud, cybersecurity) take 50–70 days — talent scarcity in fast-growing categories, not sector alone, appears to be the driver.
  • The national average (35–45 days) hides a roughly 6x spread between the fastest and slowest sectors — a single "average time to hire" figure understates how much this varies by role type.
  • No audited national benchmark exists for India broken down this way — we're reporting the most complete public reference available, not an official statistic.

Sources & methodology

The sector figures above are drawn from aggregated India recruitment-industry reporting. The source material is explicit about its own limitation: "India has no independent national benchmark that breaks time-to-hire down cleanly by sector or level." The figures reflect aggregated practice across sources rather than a single controlled dataset, and the original publisher recommends treating them "as a gut-check on your own pipeline, not as hard fact." We're carrying that caveat forward rather than presenting these numbers with more confidence than the underlying data supports.

Why this isn't a named-company leaderboard: the content plan for this page originally called for a ranked list of specific companies by median response time, computed from Switchly's own application data. Switchly's current application volume (a few hundred total, concentrated among a small number of companies) isn't large enough to compute a reliable per-company median without a single fast or slow reply skewing the result — so we published the sector-level picture instead of a leaderboard built on too little data.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a ranking of specific companies, or of sectors?

Sectors, not individual companies. We originally set out to build a named-company leaderboard using Switchly's own application data, but the platform's current volume (a few hundred applications total) is too small to compute a statistically meaningful per-company median without risking a misleading ranking. Sector-level time-to-hire is the honest version of this report we can publish today.

How reliable are these sector figures — is this an official government or industry benchmark?

No, and the source itself is explicit about this limitation: "India has no independent national benchmark that breaks time-to-hire down cleanly by sector or level." These figures are aggregated from industry practice reporting, not a single audited dataset. Treat them as a directional gut-check on your own hiring pipeline, not as an authoritative statistic.

Why do senior AI/ML, cloud, and cybersecurity roles take so much longer than retail roles?

Two compounding factors: genuine talent scarcity in fast-growing technical categories (see Switchly's AI Engineer and Cybersecurity Engineer role pages for the demand data behind this), and deeper, multi-round technical screening that senior technical hires typically go through regardless of sector.

Will Switchly publish a real, named-company leaderboard eventually?

That's the goal, once application volume on the platform is large enough to compute a reliable per-company median without a single unusual response skewing the ranking. This page will be rebuilt around that data when it's ready, rather than the sector-level figures below.
