What a Android Developer does

Android developers build the app most Indian users will actually touch, since Android runs on the large majority of phones in India. Device fragmentation, app size and behaviour on patchy networks matter more here than in most markets.

Hiring tip: Say whether the codebase is Compose or XML views, and whether you're Kotlin-only. Those two facts decide who will be productive in week one.

Android Developer responsibilities

  • Build features in our Android app using Kotlin and modern Android architecture
  • Keep the app fast and stable across a wide range of devices, OS versions and network conditions
  • Integrate with backend APIs, offline storage and push notifications
  • Write unit and UI tests and track crashes and ANRs after every release
  • Work with design and product to ship features through the Play Store release cycle

For senior and lead roles, add:

  • Own app architecture, modularisation and the release process
  • Mentor developers and lead technical decisions on performance and app size

Skills to list

Must-have: Kotlin, Android, Jetpack Compose, REST APIs, Git.
Nice to have: Java, React Native, Flutter, CI/CD.

Swap in your real stack. Keep must-haves to what the hire will use every week; everything else belongs under nice-to-have.

Frequently asked questions

Should an Android JD ask for Java or Kotlin?

Kotlin for any modern codebase. Add Java as a nice-to-have if you still maintain older Java modules. Most Android developers with recent experience work in Kotlin day to day.

Should I hire a native Android developer or a cross-platform one?

Hire for the codebase you have. If the app is native Kotlin, ask for that. If you're on React Native or Flutter, write the JD for that framework and list native Android knowledge as a nice-to-have.
