What a Full Stack Developer does
Full stack developers are the default first engineering hire at most Indian startups: one person who can take a feature from database schema to UI. The JD should be honest about the split, because "full stack" at a 5-person startup and at a 500-person company are very different jobs.
Hiring tip: Give the rough frontend/backend split ("about 60% backend"). Candidates self-select far better, and you avoid hiring a frontend specialist for a mostly-backend role.
Full Stack Developer responsibilities
- Build features across the stack: APIs, data models and the React UI that uses them
- Own features from spec to production, including tests, monitoring and follow-up fixes
- Keep the codebase healthy with refactoring, reviews and clear documentation
- Work directly with founders, product and design to decide what to build next
- Debug production issues across frontend, backend and infrastructure
For senior and lead roles, add:
- Make architecture decisions that keep a small team shipping fast without piling up debt
- Mentor developers and set engineering practices for the team
Skills to list
Must-have: JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, REST APIs.
Nice to have: Next.js, AWS, Docker, GraphQL.
Swap in your real stack. Keep must-haves to what the hire will use every week; everything else belongs under nice-to-have.
