What a Frontend Engineer does
Frontend engineers build the part of the product users actually see. For Indian consumer products, performance on mid-range Android phones and slow networks is often as important as framework knowledge, so it's worth saying so in the JD.
Hiring tip: Say whether the role is product UI, a design system, or performance work. "React developer" covers all three, and the people who are great at each are different.
Frontend Engineer responsibilities
- Build responsive, accessible UI in React from designs and product specs
- Own frontend performance: bundle size, load time and rendering on low-end phones
- Integrate with backend APIs and handle loading, error and empty states properly
- Write component and end-to-end tests for the flows you ship
- Work closely with designers to refine interactions and keep the design system consistent
For senior and lead roles, add:
- Set frontend architecture: state management, data fetching, and how the codebase scales
- Review code and mentor engineers on performance, accessibility and testing
Skills to list
Must-have: React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, REST APIs.
Nice to have: Next.js, Tailwind, Redux, Webpack.
Swap in your real stack. Keep must-haves to what the hire will use every week; everything else belongs under nice-to-have.
