What a Backend Engineer does
Backend engineers own the services, APIs and data layer behind a product. In Indian product companies the role usually spans API design, database work and production operations, so a good JD says which of those the hire will spend most of their time on.
Hiring tip: Name the actual stack and scale. "Node.js and PostgreSQL, about 2 million requests a day" filters applicants far better than "experience with backend technologies".
Backend Engineer responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain APIs and backend services used by our web and mobile apps
- Model data and write efficient queries; own schema changes and migrations
- Write tests and keep services observable with logging, metrics and alerts
- Take part in code reviews and an on-call rotation for the services you own
- Work with product and frontend engineers to scope and ship features end to end
For senior and lead roles, add:
- Lead the design of new services and make the trade-offs on scaling, consistency and cost
- Mentor engineers on the team and raise the bar on code quality and reliability
Skills to list
Must-have: Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, Docker, AWS.
Nice to have: Go, Kafka, Redis, Kubernetes.
