What a QA Automation Engineer does
QA automation engineers (often called SDETs) write the code that tests the product. The JD should say how much of the job is automation versus manual testing, because candidates who want automation work skip roles that hide a mostly-manual job.
Hiring tip: Name the automation framework and say what share of the work is automation. "80% automation, Playwright and REST Assured" brings in SDETs; a vague "QA engineer" brings in everyone.
QA Automation Engineer responsibilities
- Design and build automated test suites for web, mobile and API layers
- Integrate tests into CI/CD so every change is checked before release
- Write test plans for new features and test edge cases manually where automation doesn't fit
- Track, report and help debug defects with developers
- Improve test reliability: cut flaky tests and keep the suite fast
For senior and lead roles, add:
- Own the test strategy and automation framework across teams
- Mentor QA engineers and push quality practices into the development process
